6:00 p.m. Erie H. Meyer Civic Center. There’s No Place Like Home for the Holidays! This FREE holiday event is a family-friendly occasion to celebrate the wonderful sights, sounds, tastes and spirit of the Christmas holiday and this year will be part of the state tourism department’s Year of Alabama Small Towns and Downtowns. Brightly twinkling lights, shiny ornaments, refreshments, and beautiful music will turn the area into a sparkling display of yuletide spirit. At 6 p.m., the City of Gulf Shores will kick off the holiday season with the 30th annual lighting of the Christmas Tree. An Open House complete with refreshments and entertainment will follow at the Civic Center, Gulf Shores Museum, Thomas B. Norton Library and David L. Bodenhamer Recreation Center, as well as South Baldwin Community Theater, until 8 p.m. Santa will visit with children on the Civic Center front portico and parents can take pictures. Meanwhile Mrs. Santa will be telling stories at the Museum. You may even spot some elves! Gulf Shores Garden Club decorates the Civic Center lobby with flair, while the Special Events Division pulls out all the stops on the tree, stage, and rest of the building. Museum, Library, and Recreation Division personnel perform magical transformations of their locations. Part of the excitement is seeing the creative ways the theme is presented! Stroll through the Bodenhamer Holiday Village. See the entries in the Library Gingerbread House contest. Exhibitions, stories, movie shorts, moonwalk bouncers, crafts for children, and more surprises will be part of the fun, too!
