Gulf Coast Exploreum

Gulf Coast Exploreum

With more than 150 interactive exhibits, thought-provoking larger-than-life IMAX films, and fun, hands-on educational programming, the Gulf Coast Exploreum Science Center aspires to increase science literacy among the people of south Alabama and the Gulf Coast region, residents and visitors alike.

By sparking imagination, creating curiosity and instilling a sense of wonder in the world, the Exploreum has been a cornerstone of informal learning on the Gulf Coast since its inception more than 30 years ago. With the continued support of the community – visionary civic leaders, generous donors, contributing members and volunteers – the Exploreum is able to bring the world of science to the Gulf Coast.

Exploreum visitors can experience more than 150 hands-on science adventures in four permanent galleries: Minds On Hall, Hands On Hall, the Wharf of Wonder and the all-new My BodyWorks, the most advanced health exhibit in the nation. Guests can also enjoy live demonstrations in the Ciba Lab and BioLab daily and see a film in the J.L. Bedsole IMAX Dome Theater or the state-of-the-art Virtual Journeys Digital Theater.

The Gulf Coast Exploreum is also known for its acclaimed traveling exhibits. Click on the upcoming exhibits link to see which traveling exhibits are visiting the Exploreum soon.

The Imax Theatre is one of the best features The Gulf Coast Exploreum is known to have. Climb to the summit of the world’s highest mountain ranges, travel back in time to the age of the dinosaurs, and go boldly where no man has gone before, all from your seat in the J.L. Bedsole IMAX Dome Theater. While the majority of IMAX theaters have huge, flat screens that more closely resemble commercial (35) mm screens, the 60-foot domed screen in the J.L. Bedsole Theater — the only domed screen on the Gulf Coast — wraps around the audience, immersing them in the center of the action. The IMAX projection systems use the largest film frame in motion picture history, the 70 mm 15 perforation format, which is 10 times larger than conventional 35 mm film.
